New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill called on Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell to resign after an independent inquiry found he sexually harassed a woman and violated ethics rules. Caldwell denies the findings and, as of Friday morning, had given no indication he would step down.
The report also found Caldwell improperly sought a promotion for a state employee with whom he had a romantic relationship. Republican consultant Mike DuHaime said Republicans would attack Sherrill for choosing Caldwell over other Democrats despite concerns some had raised. Democrat Julie Roginsky praised Sherrill’s quick response but argued misconduct complaints should be investigated by an independent body, not politicians.
An Emerson College poll cited in the discussion showed Democrats leading Republicans 53% to 42% on the generic congressional ballot. Other recent polls showed Democratic leads of 5 to 9 points, while President Donald Trump’s disapproval rating was 58%. DuHaime said the polling, if correct, pointed to a major Republican setback in November, but noted there was still time for the picture to change.
