A £100m plan for Buxton’s Springs shopping centre would add 332 homes, shops and restaurants, while using some existing parking and adding spaces near the station. Residents and a councillor say the distance could deter shoppers; High Peak Borough Council has yet to decide.
Resident Ruby Moon organized a weekend protest, arguing the homes may not meet local needs because buyers could commute to Manchester and spend money there. She also said the replacement parking would be farther from shops. Councillor Rachael Quinn said the planned home count had grown since the project was first proposed and warned elderly shoppers could struggle to reach parking near the station.
Capital&Centric says the homes would make the area safer and more vibrant, and that the redevelopment would help reverse decline. Its plans also include new shops, bars and restaurants and making the River Wye more accessible. The developer says the station-area spaces will be sheltered and that the project will provide more parking overall.
