Deshaun Watson is likely to remain Cleveland’s Week 4 starter, with Shedeur Sanders as backup, The Athletic’s Jonathan Jones reports. A Watson injury or a terrible Week 3 against Carolina could prompt a change; otherwise, Sanders may have to wait until Week 5.
Jones says the short turnaround before Week 4 makes a switch less likely: even a loss and some struggles by Watson in Week 3 might not cost him the job. A Sanders start in Week 5 could become an option after back-to-back losses to Carolina and Pittsburgh if Watson performs poorly in both games.
Through two games, Watson has completed 76.9% of his passes for 443 yards, three touchdowns and one interception, with a 112.9 passer rating. He went 24 of 30 for 238 yards and two touchdowns in Cleveland’s Week 2 win over Tampa Bay.
