PEOPLE’s exclusive behind-the-scenes first look previews Audible’s nearly six-hour “Dracula” audio production, due Oct. 1. Jonathan Bailey plays Dracula, Maggie Gyllenhaal is Professor Van Helsing, recast as a woman, and Ella Purnell voices Mina.
Directed by Mary Lambert and scored by Ilan Eshkeri, the production turns Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel into a psychological thriller. After Jonathan Harker disappears during a visit to Transylvania, Mina pieces together events from letters and other documents and realizes the same predator is hunting her. Audible production and casting director Mariele Runacre-Temple said making Van Helsing a woman brought “fresh energy” to the character.
Other English-language roles go to Louis Partridge as Jonathan Harker, Aimee Lou Wood as Lucy, David Jonsson as Dr. Seward, Lesley Manville as Mrs. Westenra, Johnny Flynn as Renfield and Francis Lovehall as Arthur. International versions will also feature French, German, Italian, Castilian Spanish and Latin American Spanish casts.
