The Austin area has recorded 49 days at or above 100°F, compared with a historical average of 29 and 25 last year. Forecasts point to cooler air and scattered showers or thunderstorms in parts of Central Texas this week.
Camp Mabry received just over 0.1 inch of rain in September, all of it on Sept. 6. Forecast models suggest totals from about 0.1 inch to more than 0.5 inch in some places.
Because dry, hardened ground may shed heavier downpours, localized flash flooding could create short-term hazards on roads and in low-lying neighborhoods. Forecasters also see the potential for wetter-than-average conditions from late September into early October.
