Director Claire Scanlon says The Love Hypothesis channels its Star Wars fan-fiction roots through music; the team avoided naming the franchise over copyright concerns, while the score pays tribute to John Williams in two scenes featuring Adam.
Scanlon said a fan suggestion on TikTok prompted the use of Gracie Abrams’ “Mess It Up” at the start of the film. Abrams is the daughter of J.J. Abrams, who co-wrote and directed the first two films in the modern Star Wars trilogy.
Scanlon said the two score cues echo Darth Vader and Kylo Ren: they play as Adam enters a coffee shop and later walks down a hall to get Tom. Composer Laura Karpman also used sounds from beakers and other lab elements to reflect Olive and Adam’s intelligence and cleverness as scientists.
