Arizona beat Colorado 5-3 after scoring four runs in the first inning. Rockies starter Mason Adams recovered to pitch six innings, allowing four unearned runs on five hits and striking out eight; Ezequiel Tovar homered in the eighth.
After the first, Adams retired 13 straight batters before giving up another hit in the sixth. His eight strikeouts were a career high, with four coming on swinging curveballs, and it was his first start of the season to reach the sixth inning. Manager Warren Schaeffer said Adams kept his composure and was “basically unhittable” afterward.
Tim Tawa's solo homer in the eighth gave Arizona its fifth run. The Diamondbacks also got help in the Wild Card race when the Cubs lost to Miami and the Phillies to Milwaukee, opening a chance to challenge for one of three available playoff spots. The teams' series finale is scheduled for Thursday at 1:10 p.m. MT.
