Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he proposed a seven-day plan to the US: if conditions are met, the Strait of Hormuz would reopen at the end of day seven and talks restart. He said the terms went no further than what both countries agreed in June.
Iranian state media said Tehran’s conditions included an immediate lifting of the US naval blockade off Iran’s coast, release of all frozen Iranian assets and an end to the war on all fronts. The New York Times and CNN reported the proposal was sent through a mediator. A White House official told CNN discussions through mediators were “positive and constructive.” US and Iranian representatives also held talks on the UN General Assembly sidelines Tuesday, their first such negotiations in months.
The Strait is a crucial route for global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments. Control of it remains a central dispute between Washington and Tehran; the war has increasingly appeared deadlocked.
