Susan Sarandon, Hannah Einbinder, Darializa Avila Chevalier and Chi Osse were among at least 30 arrested at an anti-Netanyahu protest outside the UN Thursday, before Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s General Assembly speech. Around 200 people gathered at the rally.
Jewish Voice for Peace, a Jewish activist group that supports Palestinians, organized the rally. Participant Manijeh Moradian, a university professor, said protesters were speaking out against what she called the “obliteration” of Gaza and Netanyahu’s use of the UN platform to justify Israel’s actions.
Protesters blocked traffic, and police ordered them to leave over loudspeakers. Some moved to sidewalks, but the core group stayed seated and chanting; officers pulled protesters out, zip-tied their hands behind their backs and escorted them to police buses. At the General Assembly, Netanyahu defended Israel’s actions in the region as dozens of delegates streamed out of the hall.
