Amazon.ia will pair AI, satellites and forest sensors to track biodiversity

Scientists and conservation groups launched Amazon.ia, a network that will combine satellite images, forest sensors and AI to monitor biodiversity and ecosystem health across the Amazon basin, aiming to generate near-real-time information for conservation decisions.

Formally launched Wednesday during Climate Week in New York, the initiative brings together more than two dozen research, conservation and technology partners from Latin America, the United States, Canada and Europe. The Bezos Earth Fund awarded more than $14 million to the Andes Amazon Fund and World Resources Institute to support the project.

Monitoring sites are planned across different Amazonian ecosystems, with standardized field data intended to make biodiversity information comparable across the region. The project is developing ecosystem-change alerts, biodiversity measures and tools to assess protected areas and restoration projects, with local communities and decision-makers helping identify useful information.
