After heading out around 3 a.m., filmmaker Richard Sidey captured an iceberg breaking apart off Ilulissat, Greenland. A huge section broke away and hit the water, sending spray skyward and producing a surprisingly organized series of waves.
Another recent Sidey clip shows huge ice pieces falling into the sea in succession, leaving turbulent water filled with chunks of ice that the article says is not suitable for surfing. Garrett McNamara and Kealii Mamala were widely credited with the first successful rides on glacier-generated waves at Alaska’s Child’s Glacier in 2007; Surfline reported waves reaching 20–25 feet. In 2024, Eurico Romaguera was reported as the first surfer to ride a glacier-calving wave in Greenland.
