OpenAI chief Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged international cooperation on AI risks at the U.N. Security Council on Wednesday. Amodei said AI could pose a risk to humanity if unmanaged; Altman said competition was no reason for rash decisions.
Altman urged countries, including rivals, to coordinate and said OpenAI had unilaterally slowed down in the past and would do so again. Amodei had earlier proposed slowing the pace of AI, a proposal backed by Altman and Elon Musk. He also raised concerns about China’s role in the AI race, arguing that the U.S. should maintain its lead while strengthening safeguards for frontier AI.
At the U.N. General Assembly, Trump called efforts to control AI a “globalist scheme” and said the U.S. would support AI’s progress, not rein it in. He has rejected new regulations that he says could slow U.S. innovation, while saying the Justice Department could step in if AI companies create serious problems.
