Alex Bregman appeared in the Cubs dugout for the first time since a foul ball caused multiple facial fractures in Sunday's game against Cincinnati. Manager Craig Counsell ruled out a Wednesday return, citing swelling and Bregman's need to test his response to more activity.
Michael Busch's check-swing foul bounced off the turf and struck Bregman below his left eye. Bregman said the left side of his face was numb but his pain was manageable; he was trying to increase his activity as he recovered.
Before the injury, Bregman was batting .262 with 26 home runs and 89 RBIs. Chicago is monitoring his recovery, and Bregman hopes to return in time to contribute if the Cubs reach the Wild Card Series.
