Alexander Zverev said he was “honoured” that Carlos Alcaraz called him probably the world’s best men’s player right now, but wouldn’t describe himself that way. Zverev won Roland Garros and the US Open this season, and says he still has goals to achieve.
Alcaraz made the remark ahead of the Laver Cup. Zverev is ranked second in the world, having moved ahead of Alcaraz. Despite his major titles, he has not beaten Alcaraz or Jannik Sinner at tour level this year: Alcaraz won their Australian Open semifinal in five sets, while Sinner beat Zverev in all five of their meetings, including the Wimbledon final.
Outside the majors, Zverev did not advance beyond the fourth round in Masters events from the Italian Open through Cincinnati, though he reached the semifinals at the Munich and Halle ATP 500 events. His season record is 55-13, with $14,517,376 in prize money.
