Yoel Romero says he does not try to frighten people and that beating his opponent is his aim in the ring, despite Darren Till calling him scary. The 49-year-old spoke ahead of their BKFC 94 bare-knuckle fight in Manchester.
Romero also described why he did not testify against BKFC fighter Alberto Blas, who was acquitted by a jury of attempted-murder charges. Reports said Blas was charged after allegedly trying to hit Romero with a car following an argument, then striking him twice with a samurai sword; Romero was reportedly briefly hospitalized with tendon injuries. Romero said he attended the trial but did not help prosecutors because he had forgiven Blas. He also said a student’s father, not Romero, called police.
Romero said he fought in the streets for survival as a young man in Cuba, but now sees fighting as a sport and says he competes for his family and legacy. He plans to keep fighting until at least age 52 and credits his fitness more to discipline than genetics.
