Sanjib Pramanik found a rare white common krait inside his mud house in Bantul, West Bengal’s Howrah district, during monsoon flooding. A Wildlife Environment Savior Trust volunteer secured it until rescuers arrived; the trust later held a local snakebite-awareness campaign.
The trust’s team identified the snake as leucistic, a condition that reduces pigmentation and can leave an animal white or pale. Unlike albinism, leucism does not mean a complete absence of pigmentation. Rescuers also checked the house for other venomous snakes.
The report says heavy rain, flooding and waterlogging can drive snakes from their usual burrows toward homes and other populated areas in search of dry shelter, increasing encounters during the monsoon.
