Watton Town Council has pledged to restore its 347-year-old High Street clock, silent for a decade, with work on the tower under way before the clock can be repaired. No completion date was given; the council said it would be working again as soon as possible.
The tower and clock were built in 1679. The Grade II-listed tower originally housed a bell used to warn the town of fires and other hazards. Mayor Sarah Humphries said tower repairs would make clock repairs possible, and Councillor Jack White said specialist heritage builders would be used.
Resident Sandra Osborn, who has called for restoration, said more than £20,000 had been spent servicing and repairing the clock over the past 15 years. The tower is currently used to store materials for Watton's weekly market.
