VOO rose 256% in a decade, edging VTI's 240% gain

Motley Fool

Vanguard's S&P 500 ETF (VOO) gained 256% over the past decade, versus 240% for its Total Stock Market ETF (VTI); The Motley Fool says VOO may be the slightly stronger millionaire-maker, though both rose 77%–78% over the past three years.

VOO tracks the S&P 500, while VTI follows the Morningstar U.S. Total Market Index and includes mid- and small-cap stocks alongside large caps. VTI holds more than 3,000 stocks versus VOO's 500, but their top 10 holdings are identical, including Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft and Amazon. The article reports that technology made up about 37% of VOO and financials 12%.

The article's millionaire scenario is conditional: it says a monthly investment of a few hundred dollars for about 35 years could reach $1 million if the S&P 500's cited long-run average annual return of 10% continues.
