Venezuela’s interim government and opposition agreed after a second round of talks to pursue top court reform, appointing a seven-member panel to review how court candidates are selected. They also agreed to continue reviewing legislation needed for broader judicial changes.
The deal is the first tangible step towards judicial reforms promised by interim President Delcy Rodríguez. In August, the sides agreed to overhaul the judicial system and seek the return of Venezuelan assets frozen by the Bank of England. Another round of talks is scheduled for next month.
Rights groups say the repressive apparatus of the Maduro era remains in place despite promises of change. Rodríguez promised elections in a speech to the UN General Assembly this week but gave no firm timeline.
