Damon Matai Seei, a former USPS carrier, was indicted and arrested on a federal mail charge after prosecutors alleged he discarded more than 300 clearly marked mail-in ballots in Eagle Mountain, Utah, on June 3, without delivering any ahead of the June 23 primary.
Several voters later told the Utah County Clerk they had not received their ballots. Using county databases, the clerk found unusually low voter participation in the area. The U.S. attorney said it remains unclear whether affected voters received replacement ballots or were able to vote; federal officials plan to contact them to find out.
A federal grand jury indicted Seei on Sept. 16 on a charge related to the unlawful secretion, destruction and delay of mail. He made his initial appearance in federal court in Salt Lake City. DOJ officials said Seei told investigators he had no political motive. The investigation is ongoing, and his next court appearance is scheduled for Nov. 30.
