Stanford’s 2026 AI Index put private AI investment in 2025 at $285.9 billion in the US and $12.4 billion in China, noting government funding would likely raise China’s total. As of March, the leading US model outperformed its top Chinese rival by 2.7%.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer compared the incident channel to the Cold War red phone. Xi said AI should remain “always under human control”; Trump said superintelligence should be left “exactly where it is” and named the Justice Department as a guardrail. Separately, draft UK guidance tells officials to use AI only when needed, choose the smallest model that works, keep prompts short, and check and disclose AI-assisted content to reduce environmental impact.
