U.S. purchase mortgage rates diverge as 30-year fixed rises to 6.98%

Zillow’s Sept. 24 national averages showed mixed purchase rates: the 30-year fixed rose 6 basis points to 6.98%, while the 15-year fixed fell 6 basis points to 6.42% and the 5/1 ARM dropped 29 basis points to 6.70%. The 30-year fixed refinance rate was 6.98%.

Other purchase averages were 20-year fixed at 6.78%, 7/1 ARM at 6.63%, 30-year VA at 6.51%, 15-year VA at 6.28% and 5/1 VA at 6.17%. Refinance averages were 20-year fixed at 6.89%, 15-year fixed at 6.47%, 5/1 ARM at 6.74%, 7/1 ARM at 6.50%, 30-year VA at 5.54%, 15-year VA at 6.32% and 5/1 VA at 5.77%. All figures are national averages rounded to the nearest hundredth; refinance rates can be higher than purchase rates, but not always.
