Trump’s public swearing is reshaping norms in US political speech

The Guardian

Donald Trump has repeatedly sworn in public remarks and on social media during his second presidency. Politicians from both parties have followed, with analysts linking the trend to efforts to seem authentic amid declining trust in politics.

Trump used profanity in 2025 remarks about Israel and Iran and Venezuela’s then-president Nicolás Maduro, and in an April 2026 Truth Social post demanding Iran reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Vice-president JD Vance and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth have also used it, as have Democratic officials including Minneapolis mayor Jacob Frey and Senator Tammy Duckworth.

Experts interviewed cited political polarization, personal-brand incentives and a bid to seem relatable. One politics professor said the pattern has not been replicated in British and Irish politics, where politicians’ fortunes are more closely tied to their parties; a cognitive scientist said a later generation could reject the trend.
