President Donald Trump said Saturday he expects the United States and Cuba to reach a deal and does not think military action will be needed. His prediction comes as a US-imposed oil blockade, implemented earlier this year, has put Cuba under severe strain.
Trump’s administration has openly said its goal is to change Cuba’s government. The island is facing fuel shortages and blackouts, which failing infrastructure has exacerbated.
Trump also said the US wants to help Cuba and “open Cuba up to our people.” At the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, he called Cuba a “failed state” and said “freedom will be coming”; the Cuban delegation walked out during his speech.
