North Carolina Sen. Thom Tillis said Thursday Republicans should be able to disagree with President Donald Trump without being branded disloyal, urging White House officials to drop a loyalty test. He cited the Iran war as an issue where GOP members may differ.
Tillis’s comments follow a series of public clashes with the administration. In July, he said Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth had lost his confidence, accusing him of micromanaging the Pentagon and pushing out respected military leaders; Trump defended Hegseth’s performance.
On Thursday, Tillis joined Republicans Susan Collins, Lisa Murkowski and Rand Paul in backing a Democratic-led Senate resolution aimed at ending the Iran war or requiring congressional authorization. White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly previously said senior officials had provided Congress with dozens of bipartisan briefings and that Trump acted because Iran’s regime must never possess a nuclear weapon.
