Greta Thunberg and Swedish youth group Aurora are pursuing a second climate case against Sweden, arguing it is failing to protect young people. Aurora says Sweden is off track for its 2045 net-zero target despite cutting emissions faster than the EU average.
Aurora's three demands are emissions cuts aimed at limiting warming to 1.5C (2.7F), stronger protection for ecosystems such as forests, and adding to official figures emissions it says are missing, including those from burning imported biomass.
An earlier lawsuit was dismissed in February. Sweden's Supreme Court said it could not order the government to take climate action, while indicating that a differently structured claim might have a better chance. A 2024 European Court of Human Rights ruling said citizens may bring climate cases when climate breakdown threatens their right to private and family life. Campaigners with Thunberg and Aurora say they have raised more than £180,000 ($238,000) for the lawsuit.
