Three close House races draw weekly TV spending from both parties

WAVY

Candidates from both parties in North Carolina’s 1st and Virginia’s 1st and 2nd congressional districts have spent tens of thousands of dollars weekly on TV since at least Sept. 1. Both parties are targeting the races as they fight for House control this November.

More than $3 million has been spent by PACs and super PACs in Virginia’s 2nd District, with most of the money going to groups attacking Republican Rep. Jen Kiggans, according to the Virginia Political Access Project. The 314 Action Super PAC said it planned an additional $500,000 mail campaign that week. Its president, Josh Morrow, said the group has long supported Elaine Luria and cited her background as a nuclear engineer.

The Center for Politics and The Cook Political Report rate all three races close; both classify Virginia’s 2nd District as a toss-up. Federal campaigns last had to disclose fundraising and spending on July 15, with the next required filing due Oct. 15; outside groups and PACs report monthly. Democrats are targeting Virginia’s Republican-held 1st and 2nd districts, represented by Rob Wittman and Kiggans. North Carolina Republicans redrew the 1st District, at President Donald Trump’s urging, to give the party a chance to gain a seat from Democratic Rep. Don Davis.
