Justin Thomas and 21-year-old Jackson Koivun earned the United States’ first Presidents Cup point on opening day, beating Corey Conners and Nico Echavarria 4&3. Captain Brandt Snedeker paired Thomas with Koivun for the 21-year-old’s Presidents Cup debut.
Koivun won the third and sixth holes for the U.S.; Thomas sealed the match with birdies on the 14th and 15th. Thomas praised Koivun for stepping up in important moments.
Koivun said he was shaky over the first two holes before finding a rhythm. He credited Thomas with picking him up when his own play faltered.
