Therapists differ on canceling first-class honeymoon flights after a stepson cuts contact

In Moneywise’s hypothetical, a father and stepmother weigh canceling a stepson's first-class honeymoon flights after he cuts off contact. Therapists differ: one says canceling can respect his boundary; others warn it may look retaliatory and worsen the rift.

A YouGov poll cited by Moneywise estimates that 16% of U.S. adults are estranged from a parent. It says adult children are twice as likely to have cut off the relationship, while 35% of no-contact respondents say they would consider reconciliation. Therapist Blythe Landry said parents should examine whether their actions caused the rift and make amends if they did.

Debra Feinberg said the parents may control the tickets legally and financially, but should consider what relationship they want a year from now and whether the flights were a gift without an unstated condition of closeness. Alexandra Foglia said cancellation could be reasonable if it respects the stepson's decision, not if intended as punishment or a way to force contact. Feinberg warned it could turn a temporary estrangement permanent; Hannah was advised to give Phillip, Ryan’s father, room to weigh in.
