Apple’s 2022 iPhone 14 Pro introduced the Dynamic Island, turning the selfie-camera and Face ID cutout into a space for app updates and controls. Users could tap Live Activities to expand the display for more detail and controls without leaving the foreground app.
Apple’s black status bar wrapped the cutout, using the dark area to mask the lenses while presenting information, controls and widgets. Developers used the ActivityKit framework to add fitness tracking, rideshare arrival times and flight departures.
