No. 1 Texas beat Tennessee 20-17 at Neyland Stadium on Saturday. A 30-yard touchdown pass with 1:21 left and an onside-kick recovery gave the Volunteers a late chance to tie, but their final Hail Mary fell incomplete, ending the game.
Tennessee quarterback Faizon Brandon completed 17 of 29 passes for 145 yards and a touchdown. The Volunteers ran 44 times for 70 yards, with DeSean Bishop gaining 33 on nine carries. Texas recorded 10 sacks, five by Colin Simmons; Mike Matthews led Tennessee’s receivers with four catches for 72 yards.
Texas opened with a 75-yard touchdown drive and led 10-3 at halftime. Qua Moss returned a punt for a touchdown to tie the score at 10 in the second half. Texas then took a 13-10 lead before scoring on a 60-yard drive with under six minutes left.
