Sunderland beat Watford 1-0 at Roker Park on 24 September 1996 in what proved to be the club’s final League Cup match at the ground. A long-range goal after six minutes settled the second-leg match.
Sunderland had won the first leg 2-0 away, completing a 3-0 aggregate victory. They advanced to the last 32 and were drawn away to Tottenham. Niall Quinn missed the match with a knee ligament injury; a specialist had said he would not need surgery.
