Six breakfast staples may fit a healthy diet, dietitians say

Yahoo Life

Six familiar breakfast foods, including eggs, smoothies and pancakes, can fit a healthy diet, dietitians say, depending on ingredients and preparation. They favor whole grains, produce, fiber and protein, with less added sugar, saturated fat and sodium.

The six foods are eggs, breakfast sandwiches, smoothies, home fries, pancakes and waffles, and cereal. The article suggests whole-grain bread and skipping bacon or sausage in sandwiches; smoothies can include Greek yogurt or protein powder, chia or flax, oats and vegetables. Home fries can be cooked with olive or avocado oil and little salt, while whole-grain flour and protein-rich toppings can improve pancakes and waffles.

For cereal, the article suggests at least 3 grams of fiber and 4 grams of protein, no more than 6 grams of added sugar, and whole-grain or legume-flour ingredients. A 2025 randomized trial found that a low-saturated-fat diet including eggs did not raise LDL cholesterol. A 2025 umbrella review found no clear link between egg consumption and most cardiovascular outcomes or overall mortality, but weak evidence of higher LDL with very high intake; its authors called the evidence low quality and said overall eating patterns may matter.
