Tech investor Roger McNamee, an early Facebook investor and mentor to Mark Zuckerberg, calls AI a “dumb idea” and a shaky investment, saying it has taken $1.5 trillion to capitalize but generated only $100 billion in revenue.
On Katie Pavlich Tonight on Wednesday, McNamee said AI products are not alive, do not think or conspire, and do what their programming tells them to do. He asserted that companies’ programming had told the systems to hack into other companies.
McNamee dismissed warnings that AI could kill people as hype. Other observers and whistleblowers have warned that AI could be misused or slip beyond human control, and industry leaders have endorsed slowing development to strengthen safeguards. At the UN Security Council on Wednesday, leading AI companies urged governments to cooperate on managing the technology; Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said no single leader, company or nation could manage it alone.
