Supporters rallied across Venezuela on Sunday, demanding opposition leader María Corina Machado’s safe return and free elections. Machado is in Panama and has been unable to return since travelling to Oslo in December to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
Demonstrators also called for a clear timetable for presidential elections in 2027. Machado has made seven unsuccessful attempts to return, according to media reports; supporters of opposition parties Vente Venezuela and Primero Justicia also took part.
Human rights organizations said around 30 people were freed from detention Friday evening, after hundreds had been released in recent months. Foro Penal says more than 300 political prisoners remain detained. US forces captured Nicolás Maduro in a military operation in Caracas in January; acting President Delcy Rodríguez, Maduro’s former vice president, has led Venezuela since then and worked closely with Washington.
