Declan Rice, Cole Palmer, João Pedro, Benjamin Šeško, Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Tino Livramento and Pedro Porro will miss the combined September-October international break because of injuries; Rice turned down an England call-up.

Rice is managing longstanding nerve pain. Palmer left England’s squad after feeling a minor muscle problem, though some reports also cited load management; João Pedro was ruled unfit for Brazil after a slight knee injury. Šeško’s recurring shin issue flared, Rashford picked up groin and hip problems against Fulham, and Mainoo’s injury was unspecified.

Livramento, who missed the summer tournament with a calf injury, suffered a training setback before his Newcastle season debut and was not fit to accept England’s call-up. Porro hurt his hamstring in Tottenham’s weekend match against Aston Villa. Arsenal’s William Saliba is recovering from a back problem exacerbated during the World Cup and, the article says, will be unavailable for the foreseeable future.
