Phillies manager Don Mattingly called Luis Arraez’s injury update “kind of not a great one.” The team hopes he might improve enough to pinch-hit; an injured-list stint is possible if he does not improve. Arizona is one game behind Philadelphia in the NL wild-card race.
Arraez was hurt Thursday while trying to avoid a tag at first base in Philadelphia’s loss to Milwaukee. He stayed down as trainers tended to him, then hobbled off the field with assistance.
The Phillies lost their third straight game Friday to Tampa Bay and had dropped nine of their previous 14 over two weeks. They entered Friday two games ahead of Arizona with three games left; a Phillies win and an Arizona loss to San Diego would have secured Philadelphia’s fifth consecutive playoff berth. Friday’s defeat delayed a potential clincher until at least Saturday, with the postseason beginning Tuesday.
