Arizona beat San Diego 11-4 at Petco Park, leaving the Padres unable to secure the National League’s top Wild Card spot in the series opener. Casey Mize allowed seven runs in four innings; San Diego gets another chance against Arizona tonight at 5:40 p.m.
Lars Nootbaar homered on Mize’s first pitch, and Arizona scored in each of the first four innings. The Diamondbacks added four more runs in the sixth and seventh.
Fernando Tatis Jr., Sung-Mun Song and Xander Bogaerts each had two hits for San Diego. Tatis was the Padres’ only player with an extra-base hit, and the team went 2-for-10 with runners in scoring position.
