Actor Hannah Einbinder and New York City council members Chi Ossé and Tiffany Cabán were arrested at Thursday’s New York protest as Netanyahu addressed the UN; organizers estimated more than 100 arrests, a figure the NYPD had not confirmed. Dozens of UN delegates also walked out.
Hundreds joined the initial demonstration; protesters sat in the street for more than an hour, diverting official vehicles. A few hours later, an estimated few thousand people marched from Bryant Park to the UN, carrying banners urging member states to sanction Israel.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said he did not plan to attend and affirmed New Yorkers’ right to protest. He has said he lacks legal authority to order Netanyahu’s arrest and called on the federal government to do so.
