After another victim died in hospital, the toll from Saturday's tavern shooting in Wedela, west of Johannesburg, reached 18, South African police said Monday. Suspects armed with AK-47 rifles opened fire, and police are still searching for them.
Police said four victims identified so far were two South Africans and two nationals of Lesotho. One line of inquiry is that the shooting was part of a turf war between heavily armed gangs controlling the area's illegal gold-mining trade; police said they also obtained clear pictures of the suspects.
Authorities are also investigating a separate weekend shooting near Cape Town in which 10 people were killed.
