Amateur archaeologist Oliver Reidl found 934 Roman silver coins with a metal detector in Wesseling, Germany, a year ago. The Hadrian-era coins are now displayed in Bonn; officials believe they were hidden in the second century, possibly for safekeeping.
The find was reported as the largest quantity of ancient Roman silver coins discovered in Germany. The coins weighed roughly 6.8 pounds. Researcher Rahel Otte estimated they equaled six years of savings for a Roman soldier, who earned 300 denarii a year, with about half withheld for food and equipment.
