Nvidia’s Josh Parker says slowing AI to ease grid strain could delay innovation

Axios

At Climate Week, Nvidia sustainability chief Josh Parker said slowing AI development to ease grid strain could delay innovation, including in AI-enabled clean-energy businesses. Sen. Brian Schatz said building more clean energy is the way to ease utility bills.

Parker cited Nvidia’s closed-loop liquid cooling, which he said keeps chips at 113°F and reduces water evaporation. He said data centers also try to limit costs for consumers by cutting power use during peak grid stress. Google, Nvidia and startup Emerald AI recently partnered to support data centers that can flex their power demand.

Schatz said he and other senators have legislation to address rapid AI deployment and prevent data centers from raising power costs. He also said AI raises broader questions about livelihoods, as CEOs promote it while warning it could gut employment. Support + Feed founder Maggie Baird said climate discussions give too little attention to animal agriculture and that government policy on plant-based food could drive change faster than personal responsibility.
