Nicole Russell says gas-price anger shouldn't hand Congress to Democrats

USA TODAY Opinion

USA TODAY columnist Nicole Russell urges conservatives to back Republicans in November’s midterms despite high gas prices and President Donald Trump’s Iran war, arguing a Democratic Congress would put GOP tax and border gains—and the stalled SAVE Act—at risk.

The SAVE Act would require proof of citizenship to register for federal elections. Russell says Senate Majority Leader John Thune failed to secure enough votes to pass it and nearly every congressional Democrat opposes it; she argues electing Democrats would ensure it never becomes law.

Russell says gas prices are approaching their highest point of the year and diesel has hit record highs. She cites DHS reporting 16 consecutive months with no migrants released into the country by Border Patrol and Pew Research Center data showing U.S.-Mexico border encounters at their lowest level in 50 years. She also points to the tax law’s $2,200 child tax credit and protections for much of workers’ tips and overtime pay from federal income taxes.
