Matthew Schaefer, 19, won the Calder Trophy and became the youngest defenseman in more than 80 years to score a rookie-season goal. Connor Bedard, 21, was named Chicago Blackhawks captain this month, becoming the second-youngest in team history.
Reuters linked last season’s rise in U.S. average viewership to established stars and the TV series “Heated Rivalry”; it said the NHL’s return to the Olympics in Milano Cortina this year also added to the buzz. ESPN analyst Ray Ferraro said younger players are comfortable with social media and do not wait their turn.
