A SmartAsset analysis using MIT living-wage data put Hawaii highest among states; it estimated two working parents would need $115,814 a year to cover basic expenses, including child care. The estimate excludes discretionary spending. Ellevest’s Emily Green has warned that time out of work can affect salary growth and future job prospects.
