New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill asked Lt. Gov. Dale Caldwell to resign by Friday after a report found he violated workplace discrimination policy and accused him of ethics breaches. Caldwell’s lawyer called the inquiry one-sided; Caldwell denies making the reported remark.
The report said Caldwell made an advance toward a staffer’s friend and, after being rebuffed, told the staffer, “you young women are looking for young sperm.” His lawyer said Caldwell categorically denies the remark and that a state police trooper present did not hear it.
The report said Caldwell recommended a woman he was dating for a leadership promotion in May. His lawyer acknowledged the recommendation but said Caldwell believed she was qualified and did not order anyone to promote her. The report also cited seven ticketed events from Feb. 19 to May 23 where Caldwell reportedly brought guests without paying; tickets cost $65–$300. Sherrill cannot fire him, but the Legislature can impeach and remove him.
