Naima Mohamud’s debut feature “Halima” won Best Fiction Project at the Finnish Film Affair. Now in post-production, the film is the first Finnish feature directed by a Black woman and follows a 10-year-old Somali girl in 1998 Finland.
Halima dreams of becoming a pop star, but her family is constantly on the move, she has never had a friend, and her mother will not talk about her father. The film is produced by It’s Alive Films, No-Office Films and Vico Films.
Mohamud said that although Somalis have lived in Finland for more than 35 years, most Finns still know little about Somali culture and family life. She hopes the film will help Finns understand their Somali neighbors.
