Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the Oct. 1 date teased in a Sept. 12 “Go for launch” post is for unveiling the next-generation Roadster, not its launch. The company has not said when production will begin or when the car will go on sale.
Tesla announced the second-generation Roadster in 2017. A launch initially expected in 2020 was delayed to 2023, with supply-chain problems cited; after that target passed, the company discussed 2024 production and later looked to 2025.
Standard Roadster reservations initially required $5,000 upfront and another $45,000 within 10 days; buyers of the limited Founders Series had to pay $250,000. Thousands of reservations were reportedly still outstanding as of November 2025.
