Elon Musk said on Sept. 22 that AI could “beat all fields” by the end of 2027 or, at the latest, 2028. He was replying to AI researcher François Chollet’s 2021 forecast that science would become increasingly computational over 10 to 20 years.
A peer-reviewed study published Sept. 3 tested 20 AI models on 1,245 orthopedic and sports-medicine questions. Leading systems scored above 90% on structured multiple-choice questions, but barely reached 60% on open-ended tasks requiring text-and-image reasoning. The researchers said current models still face barriers to independent clinical competence.
Anthropic said Claude optimized more than 30 open-source biomolecular models in under four weeks, speeding them up roughly fourfold. Reuters reported that Anthropic had established a physical biology lab as it expands into drug discovery and real-world experiments. Google DeepMind’s Co-Scientist uses multiple AI agents to develop and refine scientific hypotheses. SpaceXAI released Grok 4.7 for coding and knowledge work, while Grok 5 is being trained with SpaceX engineering data.
