An avalanche struck Mount Himlung in north-central Nepal on Sunday, leaving 12 people missing and killing at least two; 10 others were rescued. Rescue teams searched on Monday. All those killed or missing were Nepali nationals.

The avalanche struck while people were at a base camp preparing for foreign clients to arrive and climb the 7,126-meter peak during Nepal’s autumn climbing season, which began this month. Helicopters brought the 10 rescued down; the two victims’ remains were flown to Kathmandu on Monday.

Heavy rain caused flooding and landslides in Manang district over the weekend, and the government issued severe-weather warnings nationwide. Nepal’s disaster management agency said 21 other people were killed and five were missing in different parts of the country from Thursday through Sunday.
